D065 Use of Alternative Psalters in Public Worship
The Task Force on Sexual Harassment has done a great deal of work, and its report presents several long-term efforts that will take more than one triennium to fully effect. At the same time, use of inclusive and expansive language is an issue right now. Psalmody is part of nearly every public worship service in The Episcopal Church and is at the center of the Daily Office of the Church. Permitting communities to use alternatives to the official BCP Psalter is a way to begin using expansive or inclusive language as soon as possible. The Order of St. Helena is a monastic order for women of The Episcopal Church, and has published its Psalter and also an inclusive- language Breviary for use by the wider church. Psalter for the Christian People and The Liturgical Psalter: Text for Study and Comment (which is now out of print) were first suggested for study and occasional use by Resolution 1997-A074. This resolution extends such permission for full usage, subject to the Bishop’s approval.
